Glyph
At the start of the pandemic, while watching an archaeologist interpret a glyph-covered stone in an ancient Maya culture documentary, I realized that my name, Vicente Ortiz Cortez, is entirely European and misrepresents the majority of my ancestral makeup.

Robbed of any ties to the original populations of , I felt it necessary to explore ideas for a name that would better represent me. I grabbed a pencil and paper and sketched out a glyph inspired by ancient cultures from Mexico and its surrounding regions.

An anthropomorphic portrait in profile was the result. The glyph is not meant to be read as Vicente Ortiz Cortez, but rather it represent me in a pictographic language I myself cannot read or speak.
