The piece is informed by the Mexican euphemism “arroz con popote” (to eat rice pudding with a straw), slang used to describe men as homosexual, with or without any intention to offend. "He likes arroz con popote." The euphemism is further illustrated within the work through the letter O, which appears on its side, resembling an open mouth. While the color palette for the rice celebrates Gilbert Baker’s 1979 Pride flag, the color of the straws (phalluses) references the color for aids awareness, red. The work contemplates on the significance of love today, a time in which sexual partners can be as readily available as it is to order takeout. Wider PrEP use is erasing concerns for contracting HIV, in turn leading the AIDS epidemic to fade from our collective memory. As we know though, epidemics and pandemics are cyclical, and the end of one does not guarantee another one will not emerge.
