VICENTE ORTIZ CORTEZ
b. 1992, Mexico
Vicente Ortiz Cortez is a queer Mexican artist based in Philadelphia, USA. His work addresses themes of sexuality, identity, and anthropocenic anxieties, informed by his upbringing in the macho culture of rural Mexico.
He has exhibited at the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art (CICA) Museum in Gyeonggi, South Korea, Extra Art Gallery in Cairo, Egypt, and at the Palazzo dei Cartelloni in Florence, Italy, among others, with an upcoming solo exhibition at The Beach Museum in Alagoas, Brazil. In 2019 he received a Highly Commended Award from Red Line Art Works, based in Bath, United Kingdom, a William Way LGBT Community Center Juried Art Exhibition Award from juror James Claiborne, independent curator and Public Programming Manager at the African American Museum in Philadelphia, and was also juried into a show by the Curator of Contemporary Art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) Museum, Jodi Throckmorton. Other awards include a juried exhibition Merit Award by The Nation’s art critic Barry Schwabsky, and the Stefan J. S. Levine Endowment Award. Since joining the Gallery Committee at the University City Arts League in Philadelphia in 2018, he has developed a curatorial practice, which will further expand in 2020 as he curates a multiple location exhibition as a Curatorial Fellow at Da Vinci Art Alliance, Philadelphia.
Ortiz Cortez received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The Pennsylvania State University, and also attended Studio Arts College International (SACI) in Florence, Italy.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I explore themes of sexuality, identity, and anthropocenic anxieties.
My work ranges from small colored pencil drawings to installation and performance art, all of which is influenced by my catholic upbringing in the macho culture of rural Mexico.
Through the use of my culture’s vibrant color palette, I bring attention to sociopolitical issues, raising questions about the fate of nature and humanity.
